Tooth Replacement Options

When you’re trying to replace a single tooth, your long-term options include a traditional fixed dental bridge and dental implants retained with crowns. Traditional bridges require removing a small amount of tooth in order to place because neighboring teeth need to act as an anchor for the restoration. Dental crowns are connected to either side with the replacement tooth (or pontic) sitting in between them.

Unfortunately, dental bridges do nothing to replace the tooth root, which is responsible for many important functions. In contrast, dental implants not only restore the root to replace these functions, but they do not require removal of any existing tooth structure to place. This is because the titanium post holding the crown is strong enough to anchor it and withstand your daily chewing forces.

What are Single Tooth Implants?

Single tooth dental implants consist of three parts; an implant, an abutment and a dental crown. Once the implant is placed inside the jawbone and fully integrated, a crown is fabricated to fit on top, effectively filling the gap in your smile. The restoration is customized to make your bite even and your smile look natural. The integration process usually takes anywhere between three and six months to complete, depending on the location of the tooth. In some cases, a bone or tissue graft may be needed before your jaw can effectively receive the implant.
